Cloud options fall roughly into three tiers. Hyperscalers give you every primitive and expect you to assemble them. Application platforms trade breadth for a good default path — push a repo, get a deployment, with a curated set of services around it. Simpler VPS-style hosts sit in between, offering predictable pricing and less surface area.

The honest trade-off is control versus the amount of infrastructure you want to think about. A hyperscaler will do anything you need eventually, but you'll spend real time on IAM, networking and glue. A platform gets a product live in an afternoon and starts to chafe when you need something it didn't anticipate.

Cost is the part most teams misjudge. Headline compute prices are comparable across providers; the surprises are in egress, managed service premiums, and the operational time you spend. Model the whole bill, not the instance price.
