Midjourney is an independent research lab whose models turn text prompts into images. V8.1 became the default image model in June 2026, and a V8.2 image model followed in July. It also has a video model, released in June 2025. The main interface is the midjourney.com website, and Discord is still supported.

Stability AI builds open-weight generative models for images, audio, 3D and video. Its current image models are the Stable Diffusion 3.5 family, with SDXL still available. It also offers Stable Audio 3.0 for sound and music, Stable Fast 3D and Stable Point Aware 3D for turning an image into a 3D asset, and Stable Video Diffusion. Models ship as downloadable weights under the Stability AI Community License, which is free for organisations with under US$1M in annual revenue, and through a developer platform API.
